What you need to get started
To get started with the Cylindo and Google Analytics integration, you’ll need:
- Access to your company’s Google Analytics admin settings, with appropriate permission to edit
- Access to the company’s Cylindo account on the Cylindo CMS
How to get started
To help you get started, we’ve divided the process into two parts.
To begin tracking Cylindo with Google Analytics, you need to:
- First, set up custom definitions (custom dimensions and custom metrics) for Cylindo in your Google Analytics account
- Second, map the custom definitions in your Cylindo account on the Cylindo platform
Here’s a breakdown of each step.
Once you connect Cylindo with your Google Analytics account, you can import the pre-made Cylindo dashboards directly into Google Analytics. Read more
Set up custom definitions in Google Analytics
In order to begin, load the home page of your Google Analytics account.
1. On the Google Analytics home page, navigate to the admin panel
2. Scroll down the middle tab and find Custom Definitions
3. Select Custom Definitions
4. Once you expand Custom Definitions, open the Custom Dimensions tab
If you have other custom dimensions and metrics, they will show on this page. In this instance, the arrow is pointing out that there is no other data.
What are custom dimensions and custom metrics?
Every report in Google Analytics is made up of dimensions and metrics. Dimensions are attributes of your data, and metrics are quantitative measurements.
Read an overview of dimensions and metrics here
With custom dimensions, you can include non-standard data (like Cylindo) in your reports. Custom dimensions and custom metrics are like default dimensions and metrics in your Analytics account, except you create them yourself. You can use them to collect and analyze data that Analytics doesn't automatically track.
Read more about custom definitions here
Please note that custom dimensions and custom metrics cannot be deleted once created. If you ever wish to edit them, check (or uncheck) the Active box.
5. Enter custom dimensions
Manually add the Cylindo custom dimensions for Google Analytics following the chart:
|
Name |
Scope |
1 (A) |
Cylindo 360 (Hit) |
Hit |
2 (B) |
Cylindo 360 (Session) |
Session |
3 (C) |
Cylindo 360 (Product) |
Product |
4 (D) |
Cylindo AR (Hit) |
Hit |
5 (E) |
Cylindo AR (Session) |
Session |
Please note that Cylindo custom dimensions do not need to be numbered from 1 to 5 — the numbers differ if you have other custom dimensions. If you don’t have other dimensions, numbers follow the 1–5 pattern.
Once you update the custom dimensions, the page should look something like this:
6. Enter custom metrics
Once you update the custom dimensions, update the custom metrics next.
Open the custom metrics tab from the left-hand menu:
Manually add new custom metrics following the chart:
|
Name |
Scope |
1 |
Cylindo 360 Interaction |
Hit |
2 |
Cylindo AR Interaction |
Hit |
Once updated, the custom metrics page should look something like this:
Please note that custom dimensions and custom metrics cannot be deleted once created. If you ever wish to edit them, check (or uncheck) the Active box in each individual dimension/metric.
You’ve now completed the first step of the Cylindo and Google Analytics integration. Google Analytics is now ready to receive data.
To finish the process, update the settings in your Cylindo account on the Cylindo platform.
Map custom definitions in your Cylindo account
To finish the process, you need to map the custom dimensions and custom metrics in your Cylindo account.
As you’ve probably noticed in the previous steps, Google Analytics has static dimensions and metrics index references. That means we have to map them to make sure the right data gets through the right dimension/metric.
Here’s how to complete the Cylindo and Google Analytics integration. For educational purposes, we are using a demo customer account.
1. Open your Cylindo account and navigate to the Analytics part of your account
2. Update the numbers following Google Analytics
In the Cylindo platform, manually enter the numbers for each custom dimension and custom metric that Google Analytics assigned to you.
For instance, the custom dimension Cylindo 360 Hit has index 1 in Google Analytics, so that’s the number you enter in the dimensions column in your Cylindo account.
If you haven’t worked with custom definitions in your Google Analytics account before (meaning, these were the first dimensions and metrics to be added), then the Cylindo definitions will have indexes as shown on image.
If you have already set up custom definitions, then the numbers will be different. Please update the numbers in your Cylindo account following the numbers Google Analytics assigned to your custom definitions.
Once updated, the Analytics part of your Cylindo Account should look something like this:
Click on the Save button, and you’re ready to start receiving Cylindo data to your Google Analytics account!
How to confirm the integration is successful
It may take up to 24 hours for Google Analytics to start showing Cylindo events.
To confirm the Cylindo and Google Analytics integration is successful:
- On the left-hand menu, navigate to the Behavior tab
- Select Events
- Click on Overview
- Find the Cylindo event category
Now you can click through and browse Cylindo events.
Here’s a a sample page of how Cylindo events are shown in Google Analytics
If no events are showing, make sure all the steps are executed properly. Alternatively, you can also try interacting with Cylindo on your website (spin, pan, zoom, etc.) and check Google Analytics again.
Please make sure you are not using an IP address that is being filtered out of your data.
If you are still not receiving any events, please contact your assigned Customer Success Manager. If you have any additional questions, schedule time with your assigned Customer Success Manager to make the most of your Cylindo and Google Analytics integration.
