Asset Creation Process Overview

Introduction

Every Cylindo project comprises three main stages:

  1. Data Collection
  2. Production/Review
  3. Mass Production

During the Data Collection and Review phases, materials and products are kept separate as the production process is slightly different for each. Once the materials and models are approved in their respective projects, we proceed to the Mass Production stage, during which we deliver every product in all material options.

Through this process, we generate the Master Assets that can subsequently be utilized in other Cylindo tools, such as Create, Dimension Shots, and Studio.

Data Collection

Product data is the most crucial part of any Cylindo project to achieve high quality and accurate timelines.

First, you will be asked to fill in basic product and material information such as codes and names in the Master Project Spreadsheet (MPS). Please note that we have a specific format for how this information should be structured; therefore, we cannot accept raw data downloads from your internal database. You will receive the MPS from your project manager right after the kick-off meeting, and we will continue using the same document for our future projects with you to maintain a single source of truth.

Next, you will be asked to ship the material samples and provide product reference images on Cylindo CMS. We have specific data quality requirements described in the Product Data Guide and Material Data Guide, and we cannot proceed with a project without these requirements being met.

Once you have submitted the data for all products, our pre-production team will verify if we have everything we need, request additional information if the data is insufficient, and prepare the products for the production team.

It is important to keep in mind that once the data is approved by the pre-production team, it is locked and cannot be changed within the existing project anymore. If new information is introduced in later stages of the project, it will require a change in scope and a new timeline.

Production & Review Phase

When data collection is completed and product data is locked, we can initiate production.

In model production, we adhere to what we call the Archetype approach: we produce one product from the range first (the archetype), and only when it’s approved do we begin working on the variations. This is because we can reuse certain elements from the archetype, such as legs, armrests, cushions, and other features that are shared across the range. Since these elements have already been approved for the archetype, they don’t need to be reviewed for the variations.

The process is slightly different in material production, as we produce the full material family simultaneously. A material family consists of color variants that share the same texture

When it comes to reviews, the most important rule to keep in mind to ensure efficiency is to provide comprehensive feedback during the first review round. In the second review round, you can follow up on the initial feedback, but no new issues should be reported at this stage. This is essential because every time you submit feedback, approximately one week is added to the timeline, and our delivery estimates are based on a set number of review iterations.

Mass Production

The final step in the production process is when the approved models are rendered in the approved material options, a phase we refer to as Mass Production. At this stage, no feedback is expected, as we are simply combining approved elements. Once Mass Production is delivered, we publish the products, allowing you to display the models on your website and utilize other Cylindo products such as Studio and Dimension Shots.
